Sex Pamphlet

This is a pamphlet I created in Info Design. Intended for ages 14-24, it is meant to entertain the viewer during their long stay in a clinic waiting room with crass illustrations, open-minded information, and shocking statistics. The purpose is to realize that everyone is different, and there is no need to feel ashamed or judge anyone else. It’s time to be open, honest and safe. It is three booklets saddle-stitched in an accordion format for easy handling: Attraction Be Smart and Safe Why Now?

Visual Language

Creative Challenge: Create a new visual language for film advertising. One that relies on and relishes words, instead of falling back on the usual photographic imagery. Take a director of your choice and use the power of type to promote a retrospective screening of their films. Christopher Nolan often plays with time in his epic movies. This is why I chose to center my entire concept around one continuous thread to illustrate a timeline that interacted with motifs from the three movies. • Memento chronicles two separate stories of the main character, and the scenes are clues/hints to restore his memory. • Inception plays with time since as with each deeper level, time slows down. Ariadne, the architect in the movie is told to design mazes and her character is based off a woman in greek mythology that lead the hero of the story through a labyrinth using her rope. • Interestellar’s letters are strung up in the stars, and in this movie all the astronauts are affected by time due to a blackhole.

Promotional Material

I was commissioned to design posters, postcards and banners for Tender Napalm a play in the Toronto Fringe Festival. After reading the play, which is a whirlwind of emotions for a couple after the loss of their child. I wanted to pair very stark photographs of them with drastic, but childish illustrations.

Shaw Web Design

During my time at Shaw I refreshed the corporate section of their website, and aligned it to their updated brand. I created the banners and icons, but also evaluated which pages could be consolidated, or removed. Here are some of the pages and projects that I worked on. Pumpkin Patrol was one of my favourite projects because I got to include some illustrations. Afterwards I made a few into gifs for fun.

TV Series Intro

Pushing Daisies, which unfortunately is no longer on the air, was a sweet and quirky show about a pie maker who had the ability to bring the dead back to life with one touch, but if he touched them again they would be dead forever, and if a dead thing was kept alive for over a minute; something else had to die. The original intro has the narrator explaining the premise, but as a viewer I know that that can get annoying once you’ve heard it for the eleventh time so I wanted to tell the story with a few simple visuals. The animation is done using cut paper and then manipulated in after effects. The switch from black and white to color represents life and death and the pie not only reveals the actors, but also acts as a countdown. The show had a very retro stylization to it and I wanted to capture that with some nostalgic music so I chose a song from the electro-swing genre. Music credit: “Brotherswing” by Caravan Palace.

Theatre Season

Shakespeare BASH’d is a young actor initiative in Toronto that seeks to present Shakespeare’s plays as they were written: with simple staging, clear and specific language with an emphasis on the words, synethesized with the modern. BASHd was looking for icon designs for each of their four plays during their 2015/2016 season. The icons are inspired by the story/the spark notes James Wallis (the Artistic Director of Shakespeare BASHd) supplied me with. He had selected a quote from each play that should also influence the design. They wanted posters to slap up all around Toronto to promote the season. The banners were used as cover photos for their facebook page. & Coasters!

Font Design

Creaky Serif is a font I designed using a sprig of wheat, it’s light weight created some eerie splatter effects, so I ran with it. Here it is placed within the context of a magazine article about Edward Gorey.

Lookbook

This is a simple lookbook design for a textile company. Loyal customers would receive it in the mail, and be able to see/feel the store’s collection from the comfort of their own home & with the tear out form they’d be able to order what they want without even having to go to the store. It would also be handy in the store where foot traffic could easily flip through the selection.
